But you'll never have access to the data used to make the map in any useful form, limiting what you can really do on your Garmin and making it very difficult if not impossible to move that data to Lowrance or Humminbird in the future. So in a nutshell, Garmins (like the other two brands) will make an accurate map for you if you just drive around with the auto-mapping feature turned on. But now you've just given ownership of your data to Garmin. I mean you can review the data by uploading it to the QuickDraw Contours Community and then downloading it in Active Captain. If you want to make a map in ReefMaster with a Garmin you have to import depth and position data from GPX files of trails.yech.Įven with Garmin itself, I still don't think you can review maps on a computer, since you can't view them in HomePort. But what happens when Lowrance or Humminbird come out with the next must have feature or Garmin shafts you as these companies are prone to do, and you want to switch brands? Are you going to just toss out all the work you've done with your Garmin and start all over again? Programs like ReefMaster can't even read Garmin's sonar files, nor can they generate maps for display on Garmin units. The big problem with Garmin's workflow for creating a map is you never have access to the actual data. Copy the backup file on the card and paste it to any location on the computer. The QDC format contains the GPX file along with the custom contour chart for use on a Garmin Depth sounder or Chartplotter compatible with Quickdraw Contours. Open the GarminUserData folder on the memory card. Remove the memory card, and insert it into a card reader attached to a computer. But unless they have changed some things it's a really limited means of mapping. Select a file name from the list, or select Add New File. If you can stand the clutter it makes on your screen while it's drawing and revising the map constantly, that's going to meet the needs of most people. Its been a couple years since someone asked about this and that never got a response from anyone at Garmin. All three manufacturers have an auto-map feature that creates a map as you drive around. Sounds like you've used QuickDraw Contours to map the lakes you fish, and been fortunate to find some maps from the community social map for other lakes, just as I described. I can access them on my phone and even on my android stereo In my truck which is super helpful ice fishing. There’s no waiting around or sending your files away like other mapping software requires your results appear instantly. ![]() You just fish while Quickdraw Contours creates maps. I have mapped several lakes in Alberta and Saskatchewan with my Garmin units as well as uploaded several other user made maps off active captain.
