I figure we can make it across town, but when I stop at the end of my driveway long enough for my daughter to run inside, it stalled. So, yesterday.I intend to take the car to Mazda and after starting my car it shakes and sputters even worse than before. I let the car sit for a couple days until I can deal with it and borrow my parent's car in the meantime. It starts fine and we drive the short distance home. I start it back up, and it sputters again. Not sure if they always light up when a car ceases. My car started rumbling again, and shut off on me. So two days later, I drive to my daughter's bus stop and I usually get there a couple minutes before the bus so I keep the car on. I drove it around the neighborhood, sat idle for a bit, drove some more. I'd rather do whatever I can myself anyway. After wasting so much money and being a single mom, I said screw it. I go buy oil and a new oil filter, and changed both myself. The stick is nearly dry! I didn't appear to be leaking oil, nor did I smell it burning off. I shut off the engine, restart, sounds good, and cancel our plans and take the car straight home. As we are idled, the vibration becomes more violent. It caught me off guard and I immediately pulled off a side street. Lets cut to two weeks later, while I'm driving with my daughter my car starts vibrating/sputtering as I accelerated. I didn't think I needed to prime the engine with my car, so I didn't. I had 16 miles since the light came on, which I know was risky, but while driving across country I have had to drive up to 38 miles after the light came on. My car shut completely off as I pulled up to a gas pump. We drove quite a bit all week and on my return trip from the airport a few days later, my gas light came on as I drove to the next exit. The major troubles began a few weeks ago, I had topped off my oil before going to get my boyfriend from the airport two hours away. My mechanic's attitude was as if it weren't very important. They didn't make a big deal of it, so I didn't know I should either. My engine light is on, and has been on for the duration of the many visits to their garage. And my service guys just gave me the codes and said to "maybe" go to Mazda to find out what they were. After dumping $7000 into a car in three months that I can no longer sell for enough to buy a beat up, rusted out 1978 VW Beetle, I am at my wits end that it is still having issues. Of course, since I had a great nine worry-free, trouble-free years with it, everything needs replacing at once. I am the original owner of a 2003 Mazda Protege5, with just over 165k.
